What This Module Covers
Welcome to this module, where we explore the three methods (or three routes) for finding work in the music for picture industry.
Finding work in this field takes effort, time, and an undeniable amount of luck. But even when luck plays its part, you have to be prepared to seize an opportunity when it shows up. That preparation comes from the technical skills and the understanding of how the industry works that the earlier modules cover. Without it, luck can knock on your door and you still won't land the job.
Why Most Job Hunting Fails
The goal of this module is to show you how to find work efficiently. Everyone is looking for work, but a lot of what people do is ineffective, especially when they haven't understood how the film industry actually operates. Knowing at which stage of the process to approach someone matters enormously, and that's what module 8 covers.
Cold sends — no referral, no relationship with the person you're writing to — have very little chance of going anywhere. Response rates are extremely low, sometimes 1 in 100, sometimes 1 in 1000. That kind of return is discouraging, and it's the main reason people give up.
Work Your Network, Then Keep Working It
The central idea here is to build your network, grow it, and maintain it. On top of that, you need strategies that make the search itself more efficient. It takes time and effort, but it's doable, especially if you work strategically. Without those strategies, the search gets longer, more complicated, and often comes to nothing at all.
Preparation Is What Makes Outreach Land
Everything covered in the earlier modules is what makes your outreach work. If you haven't mastered the technical side, the emotions the music has to carry, or how to hold a conversation with a director, you'll struggle to answer a request effectively when one finally arrives.
A composer isn't there to offer "nice music." A composer is there to solve specific problems in the work: supporting how characters evolve, easing transitions between scenes, strengthening emotional impact.
Sending your demo reel to people you don't know is usually wasted effort. Follow the steps, sharpen your approach, and you maximize your chances.
See you at the next step.
